| TThallus crustose, leprose, yellow-green to greenish grey, often forming irregular rosettes that can coalesce, to 10 cm wide, forming a thin to moderately thick non-areolate appressed crust of powdery granules. Thallus margin usually lobed; lobes 0.5–2.0 mm wide, with a ±plane or more commonly raised rim, rarely with a black prothallus. Soredia 70–100 μm wide, soon coalescing to form consoredia or coagulated granules 200–350 μm wide; projecting hyphae absent. Medulla undifferentiated. Hyphae 2.0–3.5 μm thick, often encrusted with granular crystals. Photobiont cells ±spherical, 7–13 μm diam. Hypothallus absent. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C–, KC–, P–, UV–; occurring in three chemotypes all of which contain usnic acid (major), zeorin (major), ±isousnic acid (minor or trace), ±atranorin (trace): chemotype 1 containing additional protodehydroconstipatic acid (major or minor), dehydro-constipatic acid (major or minor); chemotype 2 containing additional argopsin (minor), norargopsin (minor or trace); chemotype 3 containing additional caloploicin (minor), fulgidin (minor or trace). |

| A common species in W.A., N.T., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.; grows on moist rocks, soil, bark at the base of trees or on other lichens and bryophytes. Also in Norfolk Island, India, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. | ||
